Meditation with Mudras

What is a Mudra?

Mudra is a Sanskrit word that literally means “to seal the energy”.

It is a sacred gesture, a gesture of love that reminds us of our spiritual nature. It is generally done with the hands, which has a direct influence on our concentration and on the flow of vital energy through our nadis (energy channels), since it closes and guides the energy towards the brain.

These gestures have been used since time immemorial during the practice of asanas (yoga postures), meditation, pranayama and prayer, to concentrate, guide and raise prana (vital energy) through our energy channels (nadis) in our subtle body.

“Hand mudras have an important role in yogic thought and in Indian culture, where they have probably been explained in more detail than perhaps in any other tradition. However, this knowledge can be useful to all of us, bringing greater meaning to our consciousness and expression.
The hands are the focus of most of what we do, reflecting how we relate to life and how we touch the world. When our energy is strong, clear and creative in the hands, our vitality and attention are equally energized and directed in a positive way. When there is no focus or attention on our hands, our lives often lack proper focus and motivation as well.”
- Dr. David Frawley

The Mudras and the 5 Elements of Ayurveda

In Ayurveda everything is made of elements and also each finger of the hand is linked to a different element:

● Thumb - Aakash (ether)

● Index finger - Vayu (air)

● Middle finger - Agni (fire)

● Ring finger - Pull (water)

● Little finger - Prithvi (earth)

Anjalí Mudra for the 3 doshas

There is an ideal mudra for the 3 doshas and it is Anjali Mudra.

It is done with the union of both palms of the hand (palm against palm), at the level of anahata chakra (fourth chakra in the subtle body).

This is a gesture widely used in various cultures to greet, thank, pray, honor and show respect.

Some of its benefits:

1. Coordinates and balances both cerebral hemispheres.
